Loosing weight helps with foot arthritis (which is what I've got). It's less pressure on your ankles and feet when you weigh less.

Also - consider taking the vitamen supplement called Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate. It's very safe and recommended by many doctors - you can read more about it on the Arthritis Foundation's website at:
    http://www.arthritis.org/conditions/alttherapies/glucosamine.asp
When taking this supplement - you should know that it'll take a few weeks - if not a month to notice a differene (BUT IT'S SOO… WORTH IT!).

I've tried all the regular pain medications for arthritis but nothing works very well - used to even be on vioxx. For your mom - it might be worth at least trying one of the prescription meds to see if they work. If I'm really in a lot of pain I actually take OTC tylenol arthritis medication.

    Good luck!

Ironically the best thing for arthritis is excersise.

For her hands get her one of those stress release balls that she can keep squeezing.

For her feet, she should get one of those bubbling foot baths.

I don't know of foods that will help…..sorry.

weekly message (or every other week) it is amazing how much it helps the doc. will probably say samething. People have avoided surgeries and all kinds of stuff b/c of massage.

Foot exercises. Curl the toes down while bending the foot down - then curl the toes up and flex the foot up 20 reps. Circle the ankles. Do hand exercise as well.
I got rid to the little blue packet of sweetener in my daily tea and about 90% of my pain went away. I do not drink cola's but a friends knees improved when he gave up his soda addiction.

Should think more about what food's to avoid, highly acidic foods (tomatoes, potatoes, lemon…) agrivate arthritis. Might mean a diet change, but will help alot. Also taking salmon or cod liver oil pills might help. Exercise is also key, gotta keep the joints moving, otherwise it just gets harder to move them once the cold weather set's in. I found these out the hard way (although I will never give up potatoes).
