Try the Alexander technique. If you google it it will take you to the site. The exercises are great, they allowed my daughter to leave her wheelchair at home. She only needed it for shopping but after a few weeks it was needed only occasionally.

Some people swear by chiropractors however all the orthopedic doctors and neurologist I have talked to (I work in a hospital) told me that yes that chiropractors work for right now but later on down the road it causes those joint spaces in between the vertebrae really worn out and hard to work with. I have had many people say to try acupuncture. The doctors haven't said bad things about that and in some cases acupuncture is very successful at controlling pain issues.
Your doctor could also send you to a doctor that does the epidural cortisone shots for the back. I have heard lot of successful stories about those. Most of the people I talk to say that it didn't seem to really work for the first or second time but the third time really does the trick.
Has your doctor done an MRI to see if there is anything causes the pain? There are all sorts of things that could be causing the problem and lots of them can be surgically fixed. Maybe you could ask your doctor for a referral to a neurologist or an orthopedic SPINE specialist (you want to make sure it is someone that works primarily with the spine). The doctors that specialize in the field would know what to do better then a general practioner.
You can also do physical therapy. They also make TENS units which kind of like zap the area with little amounts of electricity and I have seen those things work wonders for people. I have seen people who have a total knee replacement done and be totally off of pain meds in just a few days because the TENS unit controls their pain that well. Most people that have a total knee replacement done and have no TENS unit, will be on pain meds for weeks.
I would suggest asking your doctor for an MRI and depending on what the results of that are, then ask for a referral to a specialist. I would probably ask for the referral anyways because there could be something going on that the general practionor doesn't know to look for.

And if you do find something that controls the pain and no longer need the pain meds, remember to slowly come off of them. Even though you are no longer in pain and wish not take them anymore, your body may have become dependent on them and when you stop taking them you will go through withdrawals and that my friend is no fun. I also have chronic back pain. I had surgery for mine and it fixed most of the pain but I still get achy which I can totally live with. When we trying everything before surgery, I had an epidural done and after about a week I felt pretty good and stopped taking the vicodin that I had been taking every day for 6 months. About 24 hours later I had the shakes and twitches and was sweating really bad and just felt really strange. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on and then I took a pill and everything calmed down and I felt better. I then just tapered the amount down a little bit every day until I could quit taking them without all the side effects.

Good luck to you and I hope you find something that works.
