Back Pain: Chiropractor VS Traditional Treatment?

I saw a chiropractor for the first time ever. I hoped for and got immediate pain relief (thankfully) after a bothersome ache became unbearable. I couldn't stand straight or sit and hadn't slept for almost two weeks. I don't have insurance so a trip to the emergency room and meds were not an option. My left leg is still partially numb and I cannot wiggle my toes. It is an effort to make my leg work; it's "heavy". I learned I have two pinched nerves and the Doc sez I'll end up in the hospital for back surgury if I don't continue treatment with a chiropractor. My treatment began with 3 days of adjustments and then six weeks – the first two EVERY OTHER DAY! $$$!!! OUCH AGAIN. I have to wear a back-brace for at least one month. I have applied for state insurance. Should I seek traditional medical advice; continue his proscribed course while waiting for insurance? Recommended stretches that will help my discomfort without damaging my back, muscles or nerves? Sleep positions? Thanks.

I hope someone with medical knowledge can help you with your problem! i just know that when it comes to Chiropractors, the issue can get very tricky! you might need a second opinion on what the Dr. said, then decide which is the best course of action to take, ok? a second opinion, or third for that matter is your best bet to this situation! hope you get cured and feel better!

I have back problems, and I just go to the chiropractor once a week. Your back is worse than mine, so IDK how to help you. It's good to sleep flat on your back, but I can't, so good luck.

You said that you felt immediate pain relief from the chiropractor? That's wonderful, hun! If it's working for you, then continue to do it!

Chiropractors do not work for everyone. But if it's doing the job for you, then do it.

Good Luck on getting some decent insurance.

    Cheers and get better soon.

This is a good question. You may have a more serious problem then pinched nerves. I would probably recommended getting x rays or something similar to find out if there is anything else that is causing this problem.

    Good luck

Chiropractor is more natural than pills and surgery.

I'd stick w/ the chiro… you won't regret it. And if you think they are expensive, traditional methods as you state are way more expensive.

I had a pinched nerve that made my right hand go numb. After 5 visits the numbness was almost gone. By the 7th I was healed. Been good since.

Similar thing happened years ago but was a crick in my neck. Again, 4 visits and I was healed.

Chiropractor is not a quack doctor as many call them. They look at the body with simple logic. For all things are connected. Next time you are in his office, find the big body chart showing bones, organs and nerves. You will see how a pinched nerve in one spot can cause pain elsewhere. Traditional methods just focus on point of pain and give pills to cure. Pills just mask the pain, never curing it. Where chiropractor see's the pain, but then goes to where the issue really is.

And cracking of joints and such does not cause issues later like the old wives tale speaks of. Cracked my hands, feet, neck for life, and at 38 I have no problems.

I have had back and neck fractures that I've had treated by chiropractic for years. I suggest you have x-rays taken (ouch) to see if traditional medicine would be helpful. I found that MD's just prescribed medication after medication that did not address the problem. If you can find a chiropractor who graduated from Palmer (just ask on phone), or one who moves the body, not crack and pop the spine, they're better. Osteopaths can be helpful, too.

I work in a chiropractic college and get free chiropractic treatment so I may sound a bit biased when I say stick with the chiropractor. In my experience a chiropractor will take a more holistic approach to treatment and will take into account lifestyle etc. It is a more thorough and individual treatment and though some of the adjustments can be a bit scary they do leave you with a better posture etc. You say that you have had a positive experience so far with your treatment then I would say if it's working for you then continue. Good luck

I would see an MD. "Pinched Nerves" can be relieved with a minimally invasive procedure.

Also the chiropractor could be making things worse.

You might get a Pilate's ball and just lay across it (back to the ball) as this will pull apart the vertebrae and release some pressure.
