45 yr old sister has Rheumatoid Arthritis, denied referral to Rheumatologist and prescribed Meds allergic to :

my sister moved in with me due to complete debilitating disease.I have taken her to the Emergency room a few times and an Urgent Care Facility for treatment of her Rheumatoid Arthritis. The Urgent care Facility said they would request her Medical R and after aprx a month still have not. They refused to prescribe her pain meds and only offered to prescribe ansiad ’s which she is allergic to.They refused to acknowledge this and told her that Medical records take time to obtain and told her they will refer her to a Pain Management Clinic, but not a Rhuematologist. The Dr went so far as to ask her "who told you you have Rheumatoid Arthritis"
is there a way to report this to a Medical Board ?She has copies of Med Records from another hosptial where she had been treated. We are too broke to send her back to the other state and she is in such pain that anther state had prescribed her Morphine .She seeks Vicoden as is allergic to other meds with auto immune disease and Shogrins, low potassium
i dont know how to get her help

My mom has RA too. Awful awful awful!Try medicare or medicaid.Mom signed up for disability. They will probably get her evaluated, but I would sure find an understanding Dr. It might cost $ now, but it is better in long run. The best working med for RA that I’ve been around is Remicad. You get an I V of it every 6 weeks. Worked well for grandma. Mom is on steroids, and Celebrex and methotrexate sometimes. Tell her I hope she feels better soon, and a hot bath helps alot.

sounds like she has an HMO :( NOT GOOD! i hate how THEY direct where you can go and when you can go :(

you have to make sure the person doing the referral did a good job at it, make sure they put that she is allergic to NSAID’s, make sure they sent her chart notes saying she has RA, and you can always appeal these things. on her denial there should be an appeals phone number.

your sister’s biggest problem is having that HMO as an insurance you should help her get a PPO insurance or if she’s qualified to get a medicare or medical. with those insurance you can direct your own care and go the the specialist YOU want.

insurance companies are a hassle. don’t take it out on the Dr. they only follow the HMO’s rules.

she doesn’t need an ER or urgent care, she needs a primary care doctor. provide the copy of the lab tests and evaluation with the RA diagnosis -that’s easy and there’s no need for a medical board review.

find a personal injury lawyer who works on contingency. they’ll get to the bottom of the matter with your doctor, insurance co, and health issue, along with a monetary award of some type.
