Why did a dentist’s chair help my lower back pain?

I was having some dull lower back pain when I went to the dentist. The chair I was in was the type that reclines way back so that your head is very low. When the chair was reclined, the back pain stopped. At the end of the appointment, when the chair was raised again, the pain came back. I’m wondering what might have caused the pain to stop, and if there’s any way I can somehow position myself in a certain way at home to get the pain to stop?

Many people with back pain have found good relief through traction and certainly laying downward on the dentist chair might simulate such traction. There are probably medical equipment companies out there where you could find such a chair, but my guess is that they are rather expensive. I find the same relief when my back is hurting when I lay in a hot bath with my feet propped on the wall/edge of tub, etc. so that my feet are above my back, the pressure is relieved because the pressure is no longer on the part of your back which normally is collecting that pressure. For me it’s my lower back in the L4 and L5. The greatest relief I have ever found is through chiropractic care and the activator method. Not for everyone and you have to find the right chiropractor, but it certainly helped me. Good luck.
