Vicodin (legal use) effects not very good, would oxycodone’s effects be the same?

First of just to get it out of the way, I’m not trying to abuse drugs, I have prescriptions for a chronic pain condition…..
I took Darvocet and Soma for about 4 years. My condition has gotten worse and the pain has increased over the past year or so pretty steadily. So about a month ago I started Vicodin ES and then changed to Norco [same amount of hydrocodone, just much less tylenol, since it is for long term use].

So I’ve been taking the Norco [about 10mg hydro] the 5 times a day as prescribed. But there are 2 downsides so far……
1) The pain relief is a bit better than darvocet, but it’s still not dramatically different. I was expecting more I guess, but every little bit counts.
2) Ever since starting the hydrocodone, even with as little as about 15mg a day at the beginning, I haven’t been feeling so well. Just low energy and not "well". I’m not really nauseated, just don’t feel very good. I hoped it would go away, but it hasn’t after a month.
Shoot, I’m out of room. I’ll add..
My neurologist originally suggested using MS Contin, which I guess is long lasting, and I think is "oxycodone". But I wanted to stay on the lowest dose and pain med possible for as long as possible. But since I’m not getting relief I was wondering if oxycodone’s effects are normally about the same as hydrocodone’s?
I know every body is different and responds differently, but I guess most I was wondering how closely those 2 meds are related and/or if there is anything else that could be suggested? thank you
There’s no possibility that my condition will physically improve, all I can hope for is to control the pain. I’ve tried every alt. medicine available, none did anything. Medication is the only that that helps, and for people that need it, I don’t think there’s anything "bad" about it
thanks for the help everyone. especially as to the last comment, I understand your situation and it definitely scares me…..but….
I have been doing physical therapy for a few years, it keeps me better than a log :) at least, but does little for the pain. my condition is due to Lupus which is an autoimmune disease. my body literally attacks the healthy cells of my muscles and joints which is where the pain comes in.
the problem is that I’m already doing chemotherapy for the lupus and other things to help keep the disease itself as under control as possible, but the pain remains. I can’t really function much as it is and it is only getting worse, which is where at least in my mind [rationalized or not, I'm not sure?] I don’t have much to loose.
I think I finally just came to terms that this isn’t going away, and that I’ll probably be on pain meds for the rest of my life. so withdrawal in theory wouldn’t ever really even happen. my disease isn’t expected to ever go away. that my dilema

I amnot sure if it would help your pain any better, there has to be SOME reason they move people from hydro. to that….I have taken both, I didnt see that one was any better than the other, but everyone is different. Maybe they want you to take it because it is time released.
I hope something works for you!!

I’m sorry to say but hydrocodon(vicodin), oxycodon(percocet), Oxycontin are all the same strain of opiate (heroin)

You are smart to not want a high dose level. I hope your doctor is watching your liver & kidney functions closely as all this medication is going to effect these organs. There are pain specialists and perhaps your dr. should refer you to one.
I don’t know why you have chronic pain, but maybe you should look into alternative medicine for this like acupunture so you do not have to take a much or any of these horrible chemicals. I hope you can do this and will be praying for your success.

First of all i would just like to say that my husband was in your same position about 8 years ago. They started him on regulare vicodins, them vicodins ES, Then percoset, then Oxy Cotin. His was for severe and inoperatable back pain. He eventually became addicted to opiates, which is all narcotic pain killers, and his body was sick and withdrawled without them. He lost just about everything from his addiction, not just material things either, eventually almost his family. It is common sense that if you take something everyday, eventually your body is going to become dependent on them to function. And when you don’t have them, you will do anything to get them and your body will withdrawl until you do. I don’t want to scare you and you are in the beginning stages and i know you are probaly reading this saying "not me", but the route you are taking, it is going to be you. Eventually, my husband got sick of living with an addiction and went to his doctor for help. HIs doctor or myself never doubted he was in pain, there was medical proof, but the addiction was ruining his life. His doctor entered him in to a pain management clinic, where he went through physical therepy, occupational therepy and physo. treatments. Now he is still in pain , taking non narcotic pain med. and deals with the pain day by day. He would rather deal with the pain then deal with an addcition and lose everything in his life in the process. It sounds like your doctor is working his way up by increasing your medications. Darvocet is one of the lowest narcotics out there, vicodin next, percocet is a little stronger than vicodin, ms cotins can be dangerous, the only thing left for him to put you on is oxycotin or methadone. Both of these drugs are very similiar to heroin. Please be careful, i will keep you in my prayers.

I am about to be moved up to oxycontin from percocet 10/325 today per doctors orders. It has taken a lot of discipline to only take two percocet a day. I have rheumatoid arthritis and it is worse in the morning, so I wake up and take it. I am kind of scared to do this, but the pain medication has allowed me to play with my kids and regain my life. When I took non steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs; my blood pressure stayed high, I had depression and my stomach was in terrible shape all the time. A lot of the NSAIDs get recalled for stroke/ heart attack etc. My mom has lupus and developed a g.i. bleed from taking them daily. I personally think I’m safer with the pain pills. However, I will say this. If you run out early, the sickness you feel from withdrawal is second to none. It’s like a real bad case of the flu for about four or five days, but I don’t think it will kill you. I am worried about the oxycontin being hard to get off of. I’d hate to ever go somewhere and forget it, etc. I went out of town once and left the percocet at home. The doctor couldn’t call it in over state lines. I was miserable to say the least. Wish me luck.

Narcotics, both of them. So – - – effects the same. Both pain killers. Oxy is more habit forming.
