    First aid:

Never use dry heat (i.e. heating pad) on your spasm (which is probably what you have). It’s just adding heat to the inflammation.

    1. ICE! Use an ice pack for about 20 minutes per hour. Ice reduces the inflammation (without meds!), numbs the pain AND *drum roll please* your body sends lots of blood to the "frozen" area to warm it up, thus relaxing the muscle and healing any injury a bit faster. Don’t apply ice pack directly to the skin, use a towel or cloth between skin and ice.

    2. Moist heat is fine. Hot showers, etc. in between icing.

    3. As hard as it may seem, DON’T just lay in bed, move as much as you can, it helps you heal faster.

    4. After icing and moving you should be able to get to the chiro. He may ultrasound the muscle to relax it even more.

    5. P.S. Never stretch a cramping muscle.

I totally relate to your pain. I have 80% degeneration (with dessication of the disc) on my L4/L5. One summer I spent TWO months unable to walk. Following the above rules seems to help me. There are also herbal muscle relaxants *usually sold as sleep aids* such as valerian, scullcap, lady’s slipper root, etc. which help me and may be of use to you. Ask you doctor if they would interfere with any of your regular meds.

As an odd aside, I’ve noticed that my back going out is (somehow) related to me worrying about money. The two months I couldn’t walk I had just inherited (what was for me) a bunch of money, so it’s not just about NOT having money. When I’m broke, the back goes out as soon as I start freaking out about it….

If it’s not better in a week, you may want to go see an M.D. for "real" meds. A Vicodin and a Flexeril may not make it all better, but you don’t CARE so much!LOL

Sending you a mental back massage!

You have to see a Doctor. If you can’t go yourself, either have someone drive you or call an ambulance.
