How to get relief from Irritable bowel Syndrome?

IBS is killing me. It has made my life miserable. I suffer from chronic abdominal pain, loss of appetite, bloated, constipated too sometimes and bowel movements several times a day. I have food reactions and many times after eating my condition worsens. The symptoms of IBS restrict me from living my full life. As of now, I have hard time studying and even working on job.

I went to gastro-entrologist. He thought I had colitis and suggested colonoscopy. Colonscopy appeared normal and so did the blood test and stool test. He then diagnosed me with IBS. He first put me on a medication which resulted in an extremely dry mouth. Then he put me on bentyl.

But the medications don’t seem to work. I have made lot of food adjustment and again there is no result. What to do now?

I can’t perform my daily life activities without extreme struggle. It is making very hard for me. How to get relief?

Several people I know struggle with this. This is what one person said helps.

*One person said it took a lot of working with her diet.
Having consistent amounts of fiber made a difference.
Whole grain breads and cereals, fruits, and vegetables are good sources of fiber.
    * She avoids spicy foods, romaine or iceberg lettuce,
artificial sweeteners to name a few.
*She takes calcium and Bcomplex, plus additional B12.
    *Eat smaller meals more often
*Getting plenty of sleep is mandatory.
    *Avoiding stress (easy to say)

*Some people are allergic to certain foods like wheat. You can try eliminating certain foods for a week and see if there is a difference. She is allergic to milk.

She agreed with the info from the site below.

"Drinking six to eight glasses of plain water a day is important, especially if you have diarrhea.

Large meals can cause cramping and diarrhea, so eating smaller meals more often, or eating smaller portions, may help IBS symptoms. Eating meals that are low in fat and high in carbohydrates such as pasta, rice, whole-grain breads and cereals (unless you have celiac disease), fruits, and vegetables may help."

    Hope this helps. :)

I suggest see a new doctor…my friend was told she had that and was in so much pain couldn’t go to school or anything. She had three colonoscopies done with no answer. Her mom decided to get anyother opinion and went to Boston (if you want answers go there) and after one colonoscopy they found out she has chrons disease. She had extreme surgery and had half her bowel removed and she is ten times better. I suggest go to someone else and tell them THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG..you know your body better than anyone else. I learned that through my diagnosis of endometriosis. Feel better..presistance pays off!!

I Have IBS and I learned what foods to avoid, caffeine, red sauces, spices etc for me. My Dr. gave me Belladonna Phenobarb prescription to take when I have bad days. Which luckily I don’t hardly get anymore. Im 40 and have had IBS since my 20’s. You should really ask the Dr. to check and make sure you don’t have Celiac Disease which is the same symptomes and often Dr.’s mistake it for IBS. My Step grandfather suffered with the same symptoms you are describing for most of his life. He is 85 and the Dr. found out last year that he had Celiac disease. He changed his eating habits and doesn’t have any more pain, bloating, etc. Look it up on internet and make sure to be tested. Good Luck

What other things have you tried. Have you tried not eating any type of lactose "milk" base products. Or left out sodium and any other type of spice / salt products out of your food. But I am no doctor, so you should still seek his help and find the right medication for you.
