Sciatica pain progressively worse throughout the day..?

I’ve been struggling with my lower back/sciatica pain for about three months now. I’m 21 and am a pretty advanced weight lifter. It all started with a severe episode of sciatica down my right leg about three months ago. It was immobilizing and the most painful thing I have ever experienced. The doctors took xrays and said there was nothing structurally wrong with my back (no bulging discs or anything) other than some "mild scoliosis". The diagnosed it as a lower back muscle spasms. I was given muscle relaxants and some physical therapy exercises to do at home. It took the pills and did the exercises and it seemed to go away for the most part.

When I came back from school I started working at my job which requires me to stand for 4-8 hours at a time. I work out in the morning and this seems to help the pain throughout the first part of the day, but towards the end of the day it gets very bad and it becomes very hard to stand. So basically it seems like the pain resets after I sleep at night and then gets agitated by standing for so long. Also, when my right leg starts to hurt during my day I start leaning on my left leg, but then the sciatic pain shifts to that leg eventually too which has never happened before.

I am scheduling a doctors appointment tomorrow, but I’d like to see if anyone has any opinions on what could be wrong with me. I’m getting very frustrated and don’t feel like I can take much more…

I’ve had the same problem for about a year now. An MRI can properly diagnose the problem. My doc put me on a Prednisone regimen and that helped for a bit. When I came off the steroid, the pain came back. I then saw an Orthopedic Surgeon and received a Prednisone injection at the nerve root (involving one of the biggest needles I’ve ever seen). That worked like a champ. I get an injection every 30 days and life is good.

It’s a chronic condition so it’s not going to go away. With proper treatment, however, you can live pain free. Hope some of this helps. Good luck to you.

Plain X-rays may not show the problem. If you have real sciatica, something is irritating a nerve root. An MRI is pretty standard now, but even the MRI will miss some things ( MRI does not show bone well, and sometimes bone is the problem) Your spine lengthens in bed, and may take the pressure off the nerve root.

Only about 10% of patients with sciatica eventually need surgery. You may well have to change your activities, tho, for a while.

I see this in my chiropractic business every single week. The problem is not where you feel the pain. If you feel this pain worse at the end of the day, the problem is actually in your feet. A misalignment in your foot, causes the arch to be affected along with the muscles and ankles of the lower leg. This travels up your leg and actually causes a twisting at your pelvis that causes your sciatic symptoms. Then when you try to take pressure off by shifting to the other leg, it twists that side causing pain on both sides.

So, you should go to a chiropractor that specializes in extremity (arms, legs, hand, feet) work. You have to ask if the do foot adjustments because some doctors don’t. I think that you will find that once you have your feet adjusted, your pain will not come on as much (and it may be gone completely). Since you are a healthy individual who lifts weights, you should respond really well to this treatment. I personally have helped many patients have releif from pain just by adjusting their feet. To them, it was like a miracle cure.

In addition, you may want to get a pair of Doctor Scholl’s inserts for your shoes.

I really wish you the best
