Lower leg pain from running.?

Just after christmas, I started playing football/soccer again after a couple of months out during the winter. Although I was out of shape I wasn’t suffering from any injuries though and was completing matches without any problem.

After about 4 weeks, I and a friend decided to join a military fitness class to help boost out fitness and lose some weight but both of us only lasted 2 weeks before suffering lower leg injuries. The training was mainly lots of running and some mild circuit training.

I took a break for a couple of weeks and tried to resume football/soccer but only managed to last 6 weeks because within about 5 minutes of running around I was in agony. The lower leg muscles on the outside of the calf which run from the outside of the ankle bone, to around the middle of the shin bone just completely lock up.

I’ve now not played football or done any exercise whatsoever for about 4 weeks until today as I thought maybe I just needed to rest the muscle but I went for a jog today and only managed half a mile before the pain was unbearable again.

It’s basically as though the muscle just locks and feels like really hot and tight. I get this on both legs but I’m running out of ideas on what I should do about it. I’ve tried buying new footwear for both running and football but neither have helped and the old footwear I had never really gave me any problems to be honest.

Now that the nice weather is here, I just want to get out and run again but this is really, really frustrating and I’m beginning to gain a fair bit of weight, never mind the fact that I live right by a gorgeous park that I feel like I’m wasting by not being able to run. It’s becoming pretty depressing.

Anyway, I’ve probably waffled a bit so in summary:
– even the mildest form of jogging causes the muscles on the outside of my lower legs to become so tight that I can barely walk.
– tried new shows for both sports.
– don’t have a horrendous diet and hydrate pretty well.
– aside from my calves I feel fit enough to run for hours.

Hopefully someone can offer some advice or tell me about similar experiences and how they solved the problem.

    I suffered from that sort of pain when i started xc my freshman year in high school, its prolly shin splints. this is gonna sound weird but it worked for me, the way i got rid of them was lifting my foot in the air and drawing each letter of the alphabet with each foot A-Z.

    it may be shin splints! look on google and youtube for some very helpful tips and info! ahhh i had those i just couldn’t even run after 5 minutes, i know what your feeling 100%! but mine were on the inside, but some cases are on the outer calf.
