    Van Bo Says:

The C5 bulge always produces sciatica, and affects one leg or both. Tingling in the arm may be from nerve impingement in the neck, with degenerative cervical discs, especial C1, C2 or from trauma, and often from excess adipose, or fat, constricting arteries and veins.

The tingling and numbness that you are experiencing in your arm is most likely coming from your neck C6 and C7. This is not normal. Pain from you neck will not cause sciatica. Pain from your neck can radiate to your mid back. As far as your lower back I would suspect L5-S1 may be herniated if you are feeling a burning pain down you leg, called sciatica. C6-7 and L5-S1 are very common disks that herniate. Having any numbness, tingling, pins and needles, etc is Not normal. I would recommend that you see a Neurologist since this has to do with your nerves. Find a good dr and get several opinions and a Dr who will listen and answer all your questions. Do keep in mind, the longer you wait permanent damage may result and surgery will not work. Time is limited so get r done asap!.Good Luck.

Van Bo would be wrong in his statement that a bulging cervical disc causes sciatica. There is no way this is possible since you have an injured disc in your neck and sciatica comes from the lower lumbar vertebrae and most frequently the L5-S1 area. You can feel pain in your upper to mid back with a bulging cervical disc. It is usually muscle pain from you changing the way you move to keep from hurting the neck.

I have herniated discs in my neck at C5/C6 and C6/C7 and also have these same symptoms. The lower back pain and legs though needs to be looked at if you are having such bad pain. As far as repair, I have been told by 2 different neurosurgeons that the cervical discs are more likely to heal after a fusion than your lumbar or thoracic spine. Your cervical discs are only supporting the weight of your head so the chance of full recovery is around 75%. In your lumbar spine, you are supporting quite a bit more weight, so these surgeries are only about 55-60% successful. The doctors have also told me that the younger you are, the better your chances of a full recovery, especially if you are only needing the cervical discs repaired.

I would call the doctor who diagnosed the neck bulge and tell him about your lower back and leg pain. He will likely order another MRI to see if there is damage in this area too.

The best advice I can give you is to get a home traction machine. There is one called a Saunders Cervical traction machine and all you do is lay on the floor, place your head in the head rest and pump up the machine so it pulls your head up and places your neck into traction. It is very effective and I use mine several times per day. It is the only time that my pain is barely noticeable! You can get them from a Physical Therapist or sometimes the doctor. Also, PT would help you to strengthen the muscles in your neck and allow those to help hold up your vertebrae and alleviate some of the pain. Massage can be helpful too, but you need to make sure you go to someone who has experience in treating a client with an injured neck. If you can find a good one, they are more than worth the money!

If you have any questions or want any more information, you can message me and I would be happy to help if I can. I know your pain very well and hope that you can find some relief soon! Good luck
