Back pain at 14? family history of back problems?

my back has been sore for i don’t know how long. i’m only 14. everyone in my family has had some type of back problems. my mom has muscle problems in her back, my dad has scoliosis, and MS. my aunt had scoliosis surgery, my grandma has osteoporosis. so did my grandpa. i could go on and on. but for about the past year i have been having back pain. mostly in the upper and lower parts of my back. and like, on the sides, right beside my spine i have been having "back twitches" the muscles like contract once really fast, then it doesn’t happen again for like 3 weeks. my pediatrician said i have a little bit of scoliosis. but i just figured i grew out of it since it wasn’t in my latest x-rays. i has those x-rays done about 6 months ago. my shoulders are a bit slightly uneven, which i read is a symptom of scoliosis. but i don’t think it would cause pain. i take dance classes, which is when the pain is the worst. i get home right after, and lay down on the floor. and every time i lay down of my back, the lower part of my spine pops. i don’t know. but i just wanted to know if you have any suggestions. my mom said she would take me to her specialist if the pain got worse. what do you think this is?

Well…i was suffering from scoliosis till i had a back operation in 2005 (fusion and fixation). The symptoms and signs you are describing (backache and uneven shoulders) are those of scoliosis and most probably you are having the condition.
Scoliosis does cause pain and sometimes it could be severe enough.
Scoliosis has got also a genetic basis in many cases and from your family history i guess it could be.
Having an X ray that shows no signs might not be assuring as in some cases progression could be rapid. So have an X ray again and have it checked by another doctor in order to make sure.
Surgery is not necessary in most cases and simply wearing a brace could help you a lot.
Stop dancing for a while if the pain gets worse and i advise you to go swimming a lot as it helps in many ways (mainly by strengthening the back muscles).
Take care of the way you sit, and the kind of mattress you sleep on as too soft mattresses could change shape and make the condition worse. The harder, the better.
    Hope that is enough…take care
