My lower back always hurts me early in the season and especially on climbs. The reason for this, at least for me, is simple: I’m not in shape! Once I log a few hundred miles, the back stops hurting.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:10 amMy lower back usually hurts because I am a little over weight. If you are carrying things with you while you ride it can happen too. The more you ride, the less it hurts. It is normal for it to feel stiff after long rides. Do some stretches for your back after riding. I’m assuming you are riding a road bike.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:10 amIt’s possible that you are leaning too far forward on your bike. See if anyone in your area does custom bike fitting. They will measure the components of your bike and use your body measurements to adjust things to make it more comfortable.

it could be the frame size of your bike , ie the handlebar might be too close/too far from your saddle , causing you to ride in a less than perfect posture

You also might have a lower back problem. Try seeing a doctor or chiropractor.
some of it may also be due to lack of fitness. If you don’t have a medical condition, you should do daily core excercises – crunches and back extensions for example. Ask for more details on core workouts in the Health > General Health Care > Pain & Pain Management
