Had lower back surgery last year…now have horrible sciatica…how can I get rid of it?

My sciatica is killing me. Its on the right side and the pain radiates all the way down to my foot (and theres always a sharp pain in the right side of my butt). I had lower back surgery last year (for herniated disk) and it helped some but not completely.

Now almost a year later I have intense sciatic pain and nothing seems to work. Ive had numerous back injections, pain killers, tried doing daily stretches…nothings worked. Im also about 30 lbs overweight and I know this probably adds onto it…but how can I lose the weight when Im always in pain and cant exercise? Its a no-win situation!

Does anyone know anything else I can do to help my sciatica? I havent tried a chiropractor yet cause Ive heard mixed reviews and am iffy about trying one. So can anyone offer advise PLEASE!

Surgery should ALWAYS be the ABSOLUTE LAST RESORT for back problems specifically. An 18% success rate is the best they can do and that is not permanent most of the time.

Chiropractors open the nerve pathways by adjusting the alignment of bones and look at the deterioration of the bone structure and make a determination as to the best plan of action. In some remote cases, they recommend surgery, but most of the time they can relieve pain and help the body recover from injuries, etc.

In addition to chiropractic help, you need to get the assistance of a Certified Nutritional Therapist that can work with you to test you for deficiencies and to guide you nutritionally to assist your body in the healing process. Being overweight is a symptom that says you are NOT healthy.

The Chinese have been using a form of chiropractic techniques for over 5,000 years. If it didn’t work, do you really think they would still be pursuing it? It is an integral part of their healing arts and it does work.

I think you will have to agree that the surgery did NOT work or you would not be having these problems. To say it "helped some but not completely" is to ignore the obvious.

    good luck to you

try using a cold pack to your back;; if it doesn’t help, you could have scar tissue build-up nearing the nerves in your low back (poor rehab follow thru);; daily stretches are what works but you do really have to know exactly which exercises & how to do them or you could reinjure yourself;; disc surgery comes with it’s problems;; you didn’t mention what type of surgery, but if it was fused, you may still be doing the same things you did with your back before (poor body mechanics &/or poor posturing techniques), which can cause disruption to the disks above & below your surgical site;; any way you look @ this, you need to see your doc.. if you’re overweight & can’t "exercise" (really no excuse cuz they can be modified for endurance & for pain), I would seriously look @ your diet & make changes there (permanent changes);; get a second opinion from another neurologist.. hope this helps you for now…

Have you seen a Physical Therapist? The surgery helped the disc problems but does nothing for the low back/pelvic muscles that can still cause problems. (For example: piriformis syndrome – look it up). Also try exercising in water ( a shallow pool) the buoyancy will work with your weight and control the pain as you stretch, walk, etc in the pool. (Aquatic Therapy).

You can probably do some exercises for pain relief.
